Central goes down swinging

CHAMPAIGN — Champaign Central lost 34-13 against Normal Community on Friday night but not without a fight.

The teams traded personal fouls in the third quarter and received several warnings from the officials throughout the second half.

“I think we gave them fits (Friday night),” Central coach Nate Albaugh said. “I don’t think Normal liked that very much.”

The teams traded touchdowns early. Normal Community’s Riley Rahuba caught an 11-yard pass from Colin Olson with 20 seconds left in the second quarter for a 14-6 lead.

“We were able to control the football fairly well,“ Albaugh said. “It took their coaches a while to get it figured out.”

The Ironmen rushed for 112 yards and scored three touchdowns in the third quarter.

“Second half, they were able to find our weaknesses and exploit them,” Albaugh said.

Toby Rivera, who had 72 yards on 23 carries, tacked on a Central touchdown late in the fourth.

The Maroons didn’t qualify for the postseason.

“We’re excited about next year,” Albaugh said. “Our lower-level football teams have done well this year, and there seems to be a lot of talent coming up.”
