Playoff bid falls just short

Normal West 41, Centennial 32

Jimmy Fitzgerald was 21-of-37 passing for 378 yards and two touchdowns for the visiting Chargers, who needed a win to qualify for the playoffs. Steven Lee had 10 catches for 202 yards and Dominic Stampley had five catches for 108 yards for Centennial, which led 26-24 at halftime.

Jeremiah Peoples returned a kickoff 99 yards.

Leading 32-31, Centennial fumbled on the Wildcats’ 1-yard line. West recovered in the end zone for a touchback before putting together an 80-yard drive, capped by Darin Bethke’s 7-yard run.

“I don’t know if our kids were reading the newspaper or thinking about the playoffs, but we didn’t approach the game the right way,” Normal West coach Darren Hess said. “We turned the ball over. We didn’t execute. We were dropping passes.”
