Unity quarterback won't play
TOLONO — There’s a mixed bag of news for Unity High’s football team as it prepares for a Class 3A playoff game Saturday at unbeaten Williamsville.
Rushing leader Conner Grace, who sat out last week with an unspecified injury, will return to the lineup. Senior quarterback Justin Deters is not expected to play. He was ejected in last week’s playoff opener after scoring a touchdown. He was assessed two unsportsmanlike-conduct penalties for excessive celebrating and/or taunting.
“We felt he was wronged,” Unity coach Scott Hamilton said. “We have appealed it (with the IHSA), but there is no appeals process.
“Whether an injury, a ruling or a play, this time of year, everyone has issues. We won’t focus on things we can’t control. Our game plan won’t change regardless of who is the quarterback.”
Taylor White, a starter in the secondary who filled in for Grace in the backfield last week, likely will start at quarterback. He played the position in a varsity game against Sullivan that Deters missed with an injury.
“None of this is new to him,” Hamilton said. “It’s not like he has never played in a big game. He played last year (in the 3A state championship game), and we saw what he could do last week.”
White had 162 rushing yards in a first-round playoff game as Unity (8-2) avenged an earlier loss to St. Teresa. Grace enters this week’s game as the backup quarterback.
