Buzz grows around SJ-O's Janes
Connor Janes has received recruiting interest from most of the directional universities in Illinois — Southern, Western and Eastern. The Big Ten has come calling on the St. Joseph-Ogden fullback/linebacker, too, save for Urban Meyer’s Ohio State Buckeyes.
And Virginia Tech became the latest to show interest in the senior-to-be with a phone call last week.
One program, though, would probably get an immediate “Yes!” if a scholarship offer was forthcoming: Illinois, his “dream school.”
“I like their coaching staff. (Defensive line coach Greg Colby), he’s really cool,” Janes said Sunday.
He added he has also spoken with offensive coordinator Bill Cubit, receivers coach Mike Bellamy and coach Tim Beckman a few times.
“And their recruits, like Gabe Megginson (Jacksonville) — I’ve talked to him quite a bit,” he said. “I’m liking where Illinois is going this year. I’d like to go Big Ten and also stay by home so everybody from my town could come watch me.”
At 6-foot-3 and 217 pounds, Janes has the size — and the frame to build on — to be a college linebacker. Tack on his bench press (300 pounds), squat (450 pounds) and 40-yard dash time (4.60 seconds), and Janes has developing strength and speed, too.
“I feel like I’m a pretty good college-sized athlete right now. I’m going to hit the weight room hard after my basketball career ends,” Janes said, adding he won’t be making a college decision until after his senior football season ends.
