High school football scoreboard: Sept. 8, 2017

The first two weeks of the high school football season have started to show what teams might become possible state title contenders and what teams will head late into the season needing a win to reach the playoffs.

Unity, the top-ranked team in The News-Gazette's Top 10 since the first preseason poll came out on Aug. 8, rose to No. 1 in Class 3A in the latest Associated Press rankings released on Wednesday afternoon.

The Rockets received everything they could handle in Fairbury against Prairie Central, but the Rockets pulled out a 28-20 Illini Prairie Conference win. Unity improves to 3-0 on the season, while the Hawks fall to 1-2.

Another Illini Prairie Conference team, Monticello, made its home debut against St. Thomas More on Friday night.

The Sages are tied for second in 3A, with Cully Welter's program looking to complete another perfect regular season. And they might be on their way after a dominating 46-0 win against STM.

Another big game in the Illini Prairie Conference happened tonight when St. Joseph-Ogden hosted Bloomington Central Catholic. The two perennial playoff powers last met in the 2015 playoffs, with SJ-O nabbing a close win in a 3A state quarterfinal game.

But BCC overcame a strong performance by SJ-O quarterback Keanen Swason to earn a 59-39 win.

And, in another Illini Prairie game, Rantoul ended a 19-game losing streak with a 40-20 win at Olympia.

Shifting to the Big 12, Danville kept its perfect season intact when the unbeaten Vikings won 62-7 at Peoria Manual, while Champaign Central fell to 0-3 after a 56-35 loss at Bloomington.

Centennial also suffered a tough loss, losing 48-7 at Tommy Stewart Field against Normal West, while Urbana lost 58-8 to Peoria at McKinley Field. The Chargers are now 1-2 on the season, while the Tigers are 0-3.
