Coach of the Year: GCMS' Mike Allen

Why he's Coach of the Year: The Falcons made school history by defeating Maroa-Forsyth 38-32 in a thrilling Class 2A state championship game, marking the first such victory in GCMS lore. Allen led an offense that included running back Mitch McNutt, The News-Gazette Player of the Year, and a defense that permitted only 6.2 points per game heading into the final with Maroa-Forsyth.

Season highlights: "Definitely winning the state championship. That's a dream come true for all of us coaches and players, so that's definitely the highlight."

A few of my favorites: Favorite food: bean burritos from Taco Bell. ... First car: a pea-green Maverick. It looked like a turtle shell upside down. ... Favorite non-sports hobby: kayaking. ... Favorite restaurant: Dairy Queen in Gibson City. ... Dream vacation destination: somewhere on a deserted island with my wife. ... Favorite sporting event attended live: a South Carolina-Georgia football game back in 2005 or 2006. ... Favorite pro/college sports team: University of Illinois. ... Favorite band/musician: Kid Rock.

Three things on my bucket list: To see all three of my children get married, skydiving and kayaking down the Colorado River.

What I enjoy most about coaching: "The relationships you develop with your coaches and your players over the years. That's the most important thing in coaching."
