DANVILLE – There was no shortage of stellar performances Saturday as the 28th girls' Vermilion County basketball tournament quarterfinals were played at the Palmer Arena.

The highlights:

OAKWOOD 44, WESTVILLE 34

Quickest to 10 points: Oakwood's Stephanie Denius, 13:51.

Key statistic: Neither team shot a free throw in a first half where four fouls were called, two on each school.

Defensive note: In a previous loss to Westville, Oakwood allowed 49 points. In the rematch, the Tigers shot 27 percent from the field.

Unheralded player: Oakwood's Kayla Corzine, 10 points and nine rebounds.

Top scorers: Oakwood, Denius (22), Corzine (10), Kassandra Ashikyan (10); Westville, Candy Lewis (nine), Alex Hannan (nine).

Quote: "We told them, 'They're a team that can beat us, and they've proven it.' We used that as a motivator," Oakwood coach Rick Bough said.

SALT FORK 44, MILFORD 31

Quickest to 10 points: Salt Fork's Mallory Meade, 4:33.

Key statistic: Salt Fork played the first 11:34 of the second half without a turnover and had eight in all.

Defensive note: The Storm permitted two second-half field goals.

Unheralded player: Salt Fork's Mallory Weber, eight points, seven assists, six rebounds.

Top scorers: Salt Fork, Meade (26); Milford, Julie Estay (nine).

Quote: "She is just smooth and misleadingly quick," Milford coach Rod Burgett said, referring to Meade.

BISMARCK-HENNING 55, HOOPESTON AREA 24

Quickest to 10 points: B-H's Keri Roach, 6:40.

Key statistic: Despite getting all 14 squad members into the game by the second quarter, Hoopeston didn't have anyone score more than two baskets.

Defensive note: The Blue Devils forced twice as many turnovers the first half as they allowed shots (20-10).

Unheralded player: B-H's Jeni Free eight points, six rebounds (five offensive).

Top scorers: B-H, Roach (14); Hoopeston Area, Erika Ramos (five).

Quote: "Our defense seems to trigger our offense. We've lived off that defense this year," B-H coach Mike Stephens said.

ARMSTRONG-POTOMAC 29, GEORGETOWN-RIDGE FARM 25

Quickest to 10 points: A-P's Kara Carter, 25:37.

Key statistic: A-P held a 34-20 edge on the boards and collected 14 offensive rebounds.

Defensive note: A-P held the Buffaloes without a first-quarter field goal.

Unheralded player: A-P's Jamie Vela made two free throws with 0:19 left.

Top scorers: A-P, Carter (11); G-RF, Linzy Houghtaling (10).

Quote: "We've been hesitant to go to the zone, but our last two games, we've gone to it (2-3) and we've played very good defense," A-P coach Rodney Parrish said.
