Prolonging the coach's tenure: Heritage coach Lisa Sappenfield Boyer announced she would retire at season's end. Guess what? The season is still going. Her fourth-seeded Hawks won games on back-to-back nights, stunning top-seeded Shiloh in the semifinals on the Raiders' home court. Whether that makes Heritage the favorite for tonight's title game against Tuscola is debatable, but at least the Hawks are in the game.

Clearing a path on the Bunnie trail: Fisher followed a pattern all coaches hope for. Keep a game close and try to win at the end. The Bunnies led second-seeded Gibson City-Melvin-Sibley for all of 3:13 until the final 100 seconds of a semifinal game against the Falcons. Then, Marissa Williams hit 2 of 2 free throws, Ashley Miller hit 2 of 2 free throws and Danielle Tadlock hit 1 of 2, and Fisher rallied for a title-game berth.

Trojans calm under pressure: Armstrong-Potomac put itself in position for its first regional crown in eight years by securing a season sweep (3-0) over Schlarman on the Hilltoppers' court. A-P never trailed in the semifinals and used its superiority on the boards to hang on. A 21-win season comes on the heels of an 18-win year when all but one of the contributors were underclassmen.
