MATTOON — The to-do list just got a bit shorter for the Centennial girls' basketball team.
Thanks to a big night by Stacia Simmons (25 points) and a balanced effort by the inside players, the Chargers knocked off Mattoon 67-47 on Thursday night.
More important, in the goal scheme of things, Centennial clinched its second consecutive Big 12 title. A year after going undefeated in league play, the Chargers finished 11-1. They are 25-5 overall.
"It's a challenge to win a conference and to win it back to back is special to us," Centennial coach Susan Thomas said.
There is familiarity in the Big 12. Not just because of the regular season, but because of the number of times the teams see each other during the summer.
"You play these teams so much, it makes it all the sweeter," Thomas said.
Though they have been checking off their goals during the season, there are plenty more for the Chargers to try to complete, Thomas said.
"Our overall goals, we still feel are out there to achieve," Thomas said. "Obviously, we would like to make a decent tournament run here. Our regional tournament is going to be very tough."
