COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. — St. Thomas More’s Tori McCoy, who just finished her freshman season, has been invited to the U.S. team’s U16 tryouts.
The 6-foot-4 McCoy, who averaged 15.1 points and 8.7 rebounds for the Class 2A state runner-up Sabers, is one of 33 players to have accepted an invitation for the May 23-27 event.
“I have been attending this event annually since joining Blue Star to evaluate some of our nation’s best,” said Chris Mennig, McCoy’s coach with the Sabers and a talent evaluator for Blue Star. “It is an honor that no player in the country should take for granted, to have a chance to set foot in the training center of our country’s Olympic athletes. I never envisioned having one of my own players out there with me on this trip, but it will be a joy to watch her competing at the highest level with some of the peers within her class.”
McCoy is one of four players from Illinois invited. She is joined by sophomores Teniya Page of Chicago Heights Marian Catholic and Faith Suggs of Plainfield East, and freshman Nicole Ekhomu of Joliet Catholic.
“We are confident that we will have a very deep, talented pool from which we will select a 12-member roster,” said Carol Callan, USA Basketball Women’s National Team director and non-voting chair of the Women’s Developmental National Team Committee.
