Curry, Varner advance to contest finals
NORMAL — Two area shooters are among the four finalists in the IHSA state three-point shooting contest at Illinois State University’s Redbird Arena.
Watseka senior Devin Curry — the lone area qualifier in 2A — hit 11 of 15 attempts in Thursday’s qualifying round. She had the second-best total and will shoot in Friday’s four-person finals at about 8:15 p.m.
In 1A, Fisher senior Hannah Varner tied for the top qualifying mark, hitting 8 of 15 attempts. She’ll shoot in the finals Friday at about 1:45 p.m.
Iroquois West’s Elena Sanchez tied for fifth with seven makes. She lost in a shootout to determine the final four competitors. Blue Ridge’s Jamison Brandt made six treys and tied for ninth. Ridgeview’s Paige Jones ended in a tie for 26th with four makes.
Field named for Wolken. The St. Joseph-Ogden Board of Education approved naming the high school’s softball field in honor of coach Randy Wolken.
Wolken has 889 victories, the most in IHSA history, 30 regional titles, 10 sectional titles, eight appearances at state and one state championship.
