Urbana girls bounce ranked 4A squad

URBANA — The cat’s out of the bag, according to Urbana girls’ basketball coach Chris Mennig.

The Tigers leader said as much after his team outlasted Chicago Whitney Young 81-74 on Wednesday, a win that saw a Class 3A team slip past the No. 13 team in 4A.

Despite the gravity of the win — it was the ninth of the season for Urbana (9-3), matching its 2015-16 victory total — Mennig said his locker room was "somber" afterward.

“It was exciting for me to see for a program learning to win,” he said. “We don’t want this to be the highlight of our season.”

Even so, the Tigers put on a show against the Dolphins (8-3), led by Duke commit Arieal Scott’s 37 points. She nailed five three-pointers and was 16 of 16 from the free-throw line.

Lauryn Cross added 29 points for Urbana, and freshman Alarea Jackson contributed 11.

Mennig said he is hopeful the Tigers he saw Wednesday will hit the court more often the rest of this season.

“I asked them, ‘Can you bring the same focus and attention to the game the rest of the way?’ ” Mennig said. “If (they) can do that, the sky’s the limit.”
