Before Saturday's championship game at Redbird Arena, the Schlarman senior gave her cellphone to a team manager with simple instructions: Hand it to me as soon as the buzzer sounds.

It was quite the feat for a trio of area girls' basketball teams to make the trip to Redbird Arena last week for their respective state semifinals.

Never before had that happened in local history. The results were strong as well, with Schlarman repeating as Class 1A champion, St. Joseph-Ogden rounding up a third-place trophy in 2A and Tri-County hitting fourth place in 1A.

Titans' spirited rally falls short in state third-place game

NORMAL — Maiya Eskew’s day was done for the Tri-County girls’ basketball team.

The senior fouled out with 2 minutes, 5 seconds to play in Saturday’s Class 1A third-place game with Lewistown.

There was nothing more she could do from a statistical perspective as the Indians put the final touches on a 67-53 win over the Titans.

Double the fun: Emotional Hilltoppers climb mountain again

NORMAL — Celebrating transpired in many different forms for the Schlarman girls’ basketball program Saturday afternoon inside Redbird Arena.

It started simple. Coach Keith Peoples’ four seniors hugged it out at center court while waves of applause washed over them.
