Chart toppers: Area girls' golfers to watch
Emily Spangler, GCMS
A stalwart throughout her high school career, the senior has earned a reputation as one of the state's best golfers in Class 2A. As a sophomore in 2009, Spangler finished seventh at state and followed that up with a ninth-place finish last fall. This summer the senior posted a top-20 finish at the Illinois Junior Girls' Golf Championship. And already this fall, she's won a handful of tournaments with an area-best average of 39.6. Another Spangler in the GCMS lineup, junior Katie, is in hot pursuit.
Sierra Myerscough, St. Thomas More
The senior was a cog in helping the Sabers win the 2010 state championship in Class 1A by 35 strokes after finishing 19th individually. Myerscough's summer included a win at the Women's Twin City championship and a victory in the first flight of the Illinois Junior Girls' Golf Championship in Savoy. Myerscough, who qualified for the state finals as a sophomore and finished 67th, is second in the area this fall with a 41.2 scoring average.
Molly Marcum, LeRoy
An all-conference performer on the basketball court, the senior finished 22nd at last fall's state meet following a 45th-place finish as a sophomore. Marcum finished among the area leaders with a 44.0 scoring average last fall and is expected to contend for a third straight berth in the state finals.
Charlotte Goss, Mahomet-Seymour
The senior qualified for the state meet for the first time last fall and finished 27th in Class 2A. She placed second to Myerscough at the Women's Twin City, falling by 4 strokes, and performed well at the Illinois Girls' Junior Golf Championship. Through six rounds this fall, Goss is among the top area players with a scoring average of 42.0.
Kelsey Gallivan, St. Thomas More
One of the top players for Pat Hettermann's state championship squad last fall, the senior came away with a 19th-place finish individually in Class 1A. She qualified for the state finals as a sophomore and finished 55th. Gallivan competed alongside Myerscough and Goss at the Twin City and finished sixth. Through nine rounds, Gallivan has a scoring average of 41.3.
