In girls' golf
At Urbana. St. Thomas More's SIERRA MYERSCOUGH shot a career-best 73 at Stone Creek to earn medalist as St. Thomas More fired a school-record 331 in winning the Class 1A regional. "I struggled last week, so I just decided to relax and play my game and it worked out in my favor," Myerscough said. "I was calm and collected, and if I hit a bad shot, I didn't put my head down." McKENZIE STIPES added a career-low 82 for the Sabers, and KELSEY GALLIVAN shot 84. "The girls have been capable of this all year, but we haven't done it. It's a great time to peak," coach PAT HETTERMANN said. Mahomet-Seymour (364) and LeRoy (392) also advanced.
At Mattoon. Arthur's ALANA DUKEMAN shot an 85 to lead the individuals who advanced out of the Cumberland Regional at Meadowview Golf Course. The remaining qualifiers were Sullivan's EMMALEE HORTENSTINE (98), Tuscola's SYDNEY MURRAY (115), Chrisman's SHAY YATES (122) and Tuscola's TIFFANY DAVIS (123).
At Sheldon. Gibson City-Melvin-Sibley fired a season-low 337 at Shewami to finish second and qualify as a team for the Class 1A sectional at Kankakee. The Falcons, who finished 27 shots behind regional champ Normal U-High, got 79s from sisters EMILY and KATIE SPANGLER, who tied for third. Katie's score was a career low. Fourth-place Prairie Central advanced four individuals to the sectional, led by JACKIE DUFFY (83). Watseka's DREW GRIMES (98) and Iroquois West's LINDSEY LUEHRSEN (100) also advanced.
At Savoy. Three golfers from Centennial and two from Champaign Central earned berths in the Class 2A sectional next week at Mattoon. The Chargers' MADISON WHITE led the way with a 98 on the UI Blue Course as the Chargers placed fifth in the nine-team field. Teammates NICOLE ROOT (103) and GRACE KHACHATURIAN (110) also advanced. The Maroons' qualifiers were JANICE CHOO and ALISE ERICKSON, who shot 102 and 107, respectively.
At Atwood. KYLA SKINNER had 11 kills as top-seeded Tri-County (25-3) defeated Atwood-Hammond 25-16, 25-15 to advance to the championship match of the Little Okaw Valley Conference tournament. Tri-County will face second-seeded Heritage, which defeated Arthur 25-20, 25-22 despite eight kills from JULIA COHAN.
In girls' tennis
At Urbana. SARAH KRESCA (No. 3), GABI PAGLIUCA (No. 4), ELIZABETH KIM (No. 5) and CAROLINE KOCH (No. 6) earned singles victories as Champaign Central downed St. Thomas More 6-3.
