Balanced Maroons stay perfect in Big 12

CHAMPAIGN – Champaign Central won four of six singles matches to pull away from rival Centennial in a 6-3 Big 12 Conference boys' tennis match Thursday. The Maroons, unbeaten in conference play, got singles wins from Kendrith Rowland, Keegan Bannon, Hogan Sills and Patrick Wampler.

David Ruedi and Billy Regan won singles matches for the host Chargers.

Rowland and Sills teamed for a win at doubles, as did Bannon and Joel Yambert.

In softball:

St. Thomas More 2-7, Iroquois West 1-0. Brittany Einck tossed a three-hitter in Game 1 and Becca Millage pitched a one-hit shutout with nine strikeouts in Game 2 for the host Sabers. Millage was 2 for 3 with two RBI and Andrea Palazzolo was 3 for 3 with two RBI in Game 2. Courtney Miller tripled in Game 2 for the Raiders.

Urbana 5, Centennial 3. The host Tigers won their second consecutive Big 12 game, getting a complete game from Courtney Lynch and two hits from Shannon Fitzgerald. Urbana stole seven bases and took advantage of six Centennial errors.

B-H 13, G-RF/C 1. Danielle Brown pitched a one-hitter, had a homer among her three hits and drove in five runs for host Bismarck-Henning.

Fisher 7, Ridgeview 5. Caitlin Arnold and Amanda Cain each had two hits and an RBI to support the pitching of Caleigh Hennigh (seven strikeouts) as the visiting Bunnies hung on.

Prairie Central 9, Rantoul 2. Shianne Busch had three hits and two RBI, Shari Steidinger had two hits and two RBI and Kathryn Bahler added two RBI for the host Hawks. Paige Harms had two hits and Lizzy Kern and Baylie Jones had RBI for the Eagles.

SJ-O 23-11, Watseka 4-1. Unbeaten St. Joseph-Ogden got three home runs and 14 RBI from Emily Harms.

Harms homered twice, winning pitcher Jenna Slifer homered and Andi Morgan went 4 for 5 for the visiting Spartans in Game 1. Erin Cowan homered for the Warriors.

Hannah Bowen (three RBI) and Harms (three RBI) homered in Game 2.

Blue Ridge 3, Hartsburg-Emden 2. Marcie Crawford was 3 for 4 with the game-winning RBI and Staci Gardner tripled for the visiting Knights (11-4).

Maroa-Forsyth 11, LeRoy 0. Stephanie Hintz had two hits for the host Panthers.

Hoopeston Area 8, Milford 6. Erin Henk, Amy Austin and Kelly Austin each had three hits for the Cornjerkers. Julie Estay had two hits and three RBI for host Milford.

Normal U-High 13, M-S 0. The host Bulldogs were held to two hits.

Tri-Valley 6, Monticello 0. Playing one of the state's best teams, the host Sages couldn't keep up. Kristyn Barrett had two of Monticello's three hits.

In soccer:

Monticello 7, Judah Christian 0. Hannah Smith scored twice, Brittney Gallivan had a goal and an assist and Colleen Donohue made two saves for the visiting Sages (6-5-1).

Centennial 1, Mattoon 0. Paige Whippo scored in the second half and Micaela McLennand had three saves.

Uni High 1, Decatur Lutheran 1. Michelle Wong scored off a feed from Elizabeth Russell for Urbana University High (8-3-1).

Bloomington 3, Central 0. Jordan Slade made seven saves for visiting Champaign Central.

Normal Community 7, Urbana 1. Gretchen Booth scored and Aubrey Morse had 12 saves for the host Tigers.
