In this respect, it has been a unique season in the area soccer scene. In most years, a player or two or three clearly stand above the rest. Not so this time around. Last year's Player of the Year, Centennial's Dagny Olson, was injured for most of the season, scuttling her chances for a repeat. Offensive players tend to get the most acclaim, of course, and the ones at the top of the area scoring chart deserve consideration. With Olson out, Centennial's Katelynn Martinez (20 goals) and teammate Grace Ayodele (16) surged into the spotlight as top scorers for the area's best Class 2A team. Many coaches are high on another Centennial player, defender Chantal Meacham, who anchored a strong defensive unit. Sarah Kresca of Champaign Central also has been a consistent force who draws much respect from opposing teams. Among others who are having Player of the Year-type seasons: Urbana's Melinda Mendoza and Mahomet-Seymour's Brooke Stevens. Obviously, it won't be an easy choice.
