Princeton, injuries end Sabers' run

CHILLICOTHE — Going into Tuesday's Class 1A sectional semifinal match against Princeton, St. Thomas More coach James Johnson knew his team would have to slow town Tigers star Jasmine Kunkel to have a chance. Good idea, but it didn't work.

Kunkel scored in the opening minute of the game and would score the other four goals in leading Princeton to a 5-1 win against the Sabers.

Kunkel's outburst brought her season goal total to 52.

"They are a very talented team. They were a very strong team, we knew they had one player who was unbelievable. We tried to slow her down, but we couldn't," Johnson said. "They were the better team today.

As if dealing with a prolific goal scorer wasn't enough, the Sabers (15-6-1) were playing in their first sectional game without starter Michaela Ward, who was out with a knee injury. Leading goal scorer Jade Brinkoetter played, but she was hobbled throughout with a knee injury.

"It was really a disappointing way for us to end the year because we got the injury bug at the wrong time," Johnson said.

Louisette Lukusa scored STM's lone goal on an assist from Katie Kulas.
