Centennial, Central make soccer date
CHAMPAIGN — Centennial took a step closer to its third consecutive regional title.
The Chargers beat Urbana 4-0 and will take on Champaign Central in Friday's Class 2A championship match. The Maroons beat Danville 4-0 earlier Wednesday.
"A regional title always is the start of things for us," Centennial coach HSIUNG MARLER said. "But we don't talk a lot about winning this piece of hardware or that piece of hardware. We talk about playing our best soccer at the end of the season, when it counts the most."
Centennial, which has won three of the last four regional titles, was sparked by MEAGHAN McLENNAND and HALEY HOLLEM. KATELYNN MARTINEZ had a goal and an assist and EMMA McNUSSAN had two assists for Centennial, which got goals from KIERYN ALEXANDER, GRACE AYODELE and ELIZA GLEZER.
The Chargers rallied past Central 3-2 in the regular season.
"There have been some great matches over the years," Marler said. "Hopefully this one will be special for us."
The Maroons are eager to play their rivals again, Central coach Mick Galeski said.
"We want another crack at them after what happened in the last game," Galeski said.
Central, which got two goals apiece Wednesday from Sarah Kresca and Maddy Chalifoux, needs to play hard the entire match against its rival.
"We've got to finish out the game (this time)," Galeski said.
