Chalifoux nears goal-scoring record
CHAMPAIGN — Maddy Chalifoux is a well-known name to area soccer coaches. Now the Central junior is on the cusp of setting herself apart once more.
Chalifoux scored four goals during Central’s 8-0 win against Decatur Eisenhower on Thursday, tying Kim Vega’s school career record of 83 goals.
“It’s really exciting because I’ve been working toward it for a long time,” said Chalifoux, who received a pass from Claire Redden that split the Eisenhower defense before her shot from about 15 yards found the bottom right corner of the net. “I feel really glad to have all my teammates there with me, and my coaches were really supportive.”
Chalifoux will get a chance to break the record when the Maroons — who received two goals from Sarah Collins and two assists from Emica Quigley — open the Class 2A postseason at 6 p.m. Tuesday at Urbana in a regional semifinal match.
The junior midfielder still has another year left in her prep career. By the time it’s done, the Twin City record of 106 goals, set by 2003 Centennial graduate Megan Bushue, might be in jeopardy.
“I never would have expected this a couple years ago,” Chalifoux said. “Going into this year, I thought, ‘Hey, maybe it’s possible.’ It means a lot because I love the Central program, and it really means a lot to me to be a really influential part of it.”
