M-S soccer to play for sectional final
NORMAL — Despite the muggy conditions, Mahomet-Seymour was able to advance and will try to win its first-ever Class 2A sectional title on Friday after a 3-1 victory against Morris on Tuesday afternoon in a sectional semifinal match at Normal West.
“We came out a little sluggish,” Bulldogs coach Joey Gruner said after his team established a new single-season win total. “The girls knew they were playing a little slow, but they adapted.
Natalie Fulk scored the first goal for the Bulldogs (16-4) with just under 17 minutes left in the first half off an assist from Mia Epley.
Minutes later, Catherine McHale was credited with the second goal of the half after Morris kicked the ball into its own net.
“We knew they were going to be a threat,” Gruner said. “So it helped us a lot to get those first two goals in.”
The Bulldogs went into the half up 2-0.
M-S added to its halftime lead with a little under seven minutes into the second half on a goal by Morgan DeHaan.
Morris answered quickly with a goal of its own just after and threatened to score again. But M-S goalkeeper Tori Rolson stopped the Morris rally short.
“She had a huge save late in the game when we were getting disorganized,” Gruner said. “Tori came out and did what she was supposed to do.”
Rolson’s save was the second of only two Morris shots on goal. M-S will face Normal West at 4:30 p.m. on Friday in the sectional final.
The Bulldogs lost 2-0 earlier this season to the Wildcats.
“We played a very good game that day,” Gruner said. “We know they’re physical; we know they’re skilled; we know they’re athletic. Its going to take our best game.”
