N-G girls' soccer coach of the year: Mahomet-Seymour's Joey Gruner

Why he's Coach of the Year: For the third consecutive season, Gruner keyed the Bulldogs to a Class 2A regional championship — this time without star scorer Meredith Johnson-Monfort, who was injured late in the title match.

Prep pulse: May 28, 2018

The local high school spring sports season is rapidly winding down now. On Saturday, we watched athletes from the boys' track and field and boys' tennis realms wrap up their respective campaigns.

For us, that leaves just four area athletic teams still rolling through the postseason: Tuscola baseball, St. Joseph-Ogden softball, Argenta-Oreana softball and Mahomet-Seymour softball.

No doubt RANDY BLACKMAN had an impact on Urbana athletics. A huge impact.

This weekend, the retiring soccer coach will be celebrated with a string of local events.

It starts at 6 p.m. today with a happy hour at Bunny's Tavern.

Bulldogs unable to corral Senators late

URBANA — Meredith Johnson-Monfort wasn't entering Tuesday's Class 2A sectional semifinal match.

This was never in doubt. The Mahomet-Seymour senior suffered a sprained ankle and pulled tendons in her left foot during Saturday's regional championship bout with Normal U-High.

Sabers fall shy of state

COLUMBIA — For James Johnson's money, Belleville Althoff is the best Class 1A girls' soccer team in Illinois.

So when Johnson's St. Thomas More outfit squared off with the Crusaders on Tuesday night in the Columbia Super-Sectional, he set up the Sabers in a "stay home and counterattack" scheme.

It wasn't enough.

Wise with age: Experienced roster has Sabers one win from state

CHAMPAIGN — Can a prep athletic team really be considered old when all participants are between the ages of 14 and 18?

By high school standards, sure. The St. Thomas More girls' soccer outfit falls into that category as 12 of its 23 varsity participants graduated on Sunday.

And so far in 2018, having that many upperclassmen on its roster has served coach James Johnson well.
