Newman sparks Central swimmers

NORMAL — Hannah Newman won the 200-yard individual medley and helped Champaign Central's 200 medley relay take first as the Maroons finished second at Saturday's Big 12 Championships at Normal Community.

Newman, Sara Fundator, Sarah McGill and Katherine Penwell teamed to win the medley relay and finish second in the 400 free relay. Newman also was second in the 100 free. The Maroons (224 points) finished behind only Normal Community (303).

"We had tried to hang with Normal, but they're pretty deep. We put together the strongest lineup we could," Central coach Will Barker said. "The varsity girls did an awesome job. They're very tired. It was a real strong team effort."

The Maroons host sectionals in two weeks.

"We're right on target," Barker said.

Centennial's Audrey Rodawig won the 100 butterfly and 200 free. The Chargers finished sixth.

Gabi Rajic sparked fourth-place Urbana, winning the 100 back and teaming with Athena Lin, Karen Chiu and Kirsten Slaughter for a second-place showing in the 200 free relay.

Danville's Kristin Verkler was second in the 200 IM and 100 butterfly.
