Rodawig narrowly misses swim finals
WINNETKA — For years, the Champaign-Urbana area produced a bevy of swimmers and divers who made a name for themselves at the state meet.
But for the second consecutive year, C-U and the surrounding area will not have a competitor in the finals of the state meet.
Centennial's Audrey Rodawig came closest Friday, finishing 14th in the 100-yard butterfly and 16th in the 200 freestyle. The top six from Friday's prelims advanced to today's championship final, while the next six moved on to the consolation final.
In each event, Rodawig missed a finals spot by less than one second. In the 200 free, her time was 1 minute, 53.38 seconds. The 12th and final spot was clocked in 1:52.86.
In the butterfly, Rodawig came home in 57.31; a 56.97 was needed to reach today's competition.
Elsewhere, Champaign Central's Hannah Newman placed 21st in the 100 free and 32nd in the 200 free. Her time in the 100 free was 53.05, as she edged Urbana's Gabi Rajic, who came in 25th in 53.24. Rajic was 29th in the 50 free.
The next-best finish by an area competitor was from Urbana's Kirsten Slaughter, who was 33rd in the 50 free. Central's Katherine Penwell was 42nd in the 500 free, Urbana Uni's Milee Nelson was 48th in the 100 back and Danville's Kristin Verkler was 44th in the 200 IM and 44th in the 100 fly.
The best finish among area relays was Central's 37th in the 200 free.
