Ruedi, Miller look for three victories

ARLINGTON HEIGHTS – The Centennial doubles tandem of David Ruedi and Quinn Miller need three victories today to secure fifth place at the IHSA championships.

Ruedi and Miller started Friday's play unbeaten in the tournament and kept the momentum going in a 1-6, 6-3, 7-6 victory against Oak Park-River Forest's Tim Martin and Devin Jones. The Chargers won the tiebreak 7-0.

"It was a really exciting match in the round of 16," Centennial coach Don Waybright said. "The last seven points were tremendous."

In the quarterfinals, Ruedi and Miller finally hit a roadblock in top-seeded Ben Woldeberg and Sam Barnett of Highland Park. The Chargers duo fell 6-4, 6-2.

Ruedi and Miller will play in the consolation bracket today and can finish between fifth and 12th place.

The tournament run for Danville's Lewis Towne and Colby Clapper came to an end with a 6-7, 6-0, 6-1 loss to Martin and Jones in consolation play.

Prior to their season-ending loss, the Vikings put away Naperville Central's Neal Walters and Kevin Bauman 6-2, 3-6, 6-2.

Despite the Vikings' ouster Friday, Danville coach Scott Simpson was happy with the way his players competed.

"Very happy with the results," Simpson said. "Lewis and Colby were great this week. ... We hoped to finish in the top 32 and finished 17th.

"One thing that was neat was we had five schools come up and compliment us, how our team played with a lot of heart and left everything out on the court."
