Chargers do it again
URBANA – By the time Centennial teammates David Ruedi and Billy Regan were set to square off in the finals at Saturday's IHSA sectional tennis match at the Khan Outdoor Tennis Complex, Chargers coach Don Waybright knew what the result was going to be.
"Billy was absolutely spent," Waybright said. "He just finished a hard-fought three-set match with (Champaign Central's) Joel Yambert and had another one before that with (Central's) Sam Peters so he was gassed."
Instead of staging an epic battle, the teammates played a friendly match with Ruedi prevailing 6-0, 6-3. Both Chargers, as well as Central's Yambert and Keegan Bannon, advanced to next week's individual state finals in Arlington Heights.
Centennial made it two straight team titles, finishing with 28 points, eight points ahead of Central and St. Teresa.
"We're excited about the results," Waybright said. "It was a great day."
In doubles, Danville's Colby Clapper and Vibhav Reddy advanced, as did Central's Kendrith Rowland and Hogan Sills. The Centennial duo of Lupetti Tulua and Akshay Krishnamani also moved on.
