Marjanovic lifts Urbana to title

URBANA – Katarina Marjanovic was in a rush to return to state.

The Urbana senior lost only two games in winning another tennis sectional title Saturday, in the process lifting the Tigers to their second team championship in coach Melissa Welch's 14 seasons. Urbana won a tiebreaker with Bradley-Bourbonnais because it had a sectional champion (Marjanovic).

"She was in total control," Welch said. "She was in charge today. At the start of the season, she was playing decent. But she has turned it up another notch."

Marjanovic went 4-0, beating St. Thomas More's Madie Baillon in the title match. Baillon and Bismarck-Henning's Lori Haas (third place) also are headed to state.

"I feel like we as a team have underachieved all year," Welch said. "I've been harping on the girls that we're better than this. They finally did what they needed to do. It's nice."

Champaign Central's Kathleen Rowland and Nelli Golmeeva won in doubles, topping Danville's Melissa Fuesting and Emma Peck 7-5, 6-3 for the title. Centennial's Maria Mears and Michaela Kearney placed third to move on.
