STM freshman, B-H star open with wins

MOUNT PROSPECT – Maddie Baillon of St. Thomas More and Lori Haas of Bismarck-Henning won first-round matches at the IHSA girls' state tennis tournament Thursday.

Baillon opened with a 6-2, 6-3 victory against Sarah Torrence of Rockford Auburn. The Sabers freshman fell 6-1 6-1 in the second round to Liselot Koenen of St. Charles North, a Nos. 17-32 seed.

"Maddie played incredibly well, especially for the first time at state as a freshman," STM coach Jeremy Beach said. "She handled it very well."

Due to rain, the consolation bracket was canceled, so Baillon finished with a 1-1 record.

Rain prevented Haas from playing her second-round match after the sophomore defeated Michaela Zumbahlen of Effingham St. Anthony 6-1, 6-1.

Urbana's Katarina Marjanovic, a Nos. 17-32 seed, lost in the first round. Sara Kohtz of Chicago Lincoln Park outbattled the Tigers senior 6-4, 6-4.

All three area qualifying teams in doubles lost.
