All-Area Girls' Tennis Coach of Year: Danville's Mark Bacys

Second-year head coach guided the Vikings to a second consecutive sectional championship (for the first time since 2002 and ‘03) as well as a first-place finish in the Big 12 Conference tournament and also the Mattoon Invitational.

Season highlight: “We had a great season. We accomplished all three of our goals, to win the Big 12, to win the sectional and to qualify the enire team for state, which was the first time since the late 1990s. In addition, it was nice to gets wins from three of our four (state) entries.”

A few of my favorite things: R.E.M. ... “CBS Sunday Morning” ... “Real Time with Bill Maher” ... “Into Thin Air,” by Jon Krakauer ... Aurelio’s Pizza in Chicago ... Chicago Bears ... Chicago White Sox ... Mercedes G-Wagon ... Paper boy ... Cliff Floyd ... If not teaching (history), I would be an architect ... Three things on my bucket list, to go to Galapagos Islands, go on an African safari and go to Machu Picchu.

About Coach Bacys: “He always pushes us to do our best, but he’s very easygoing also. He knows what each of us is capable of and won’t stop until we get there. He has always had confidence in me, and it helped boost my confidence to get through tough matches. If I wanted help, he would go out of his way to help me. Our team is like a family, and we can go to him for anything we need. I couldn’t ask for a better coach.” — Taylor Ellis, Danville tennis player
