Mestre, Roth remain alive

ARLINGTON HEIGHTS — Urbana University High’s Alex Mestre and Edo Roth won their fourth-round doubles match before losing in the quarterfinals Friday at the IHSA state tennis meet.

Mestre and Roth, who lost 6-0, 3-6, 6-1 to Hinsdale Central’s Eddie Grabill and Harold Martin, were scheduled to play Rockford Boylan’s Adam Dahlberg and Nate Muldowney on Saturday in the consolation quarterfinals. Champaign Central’s Michael Yoo and Gabe Mitchell lost in the fourth round of the doubles’ consolation bracket.

Centennial’s Sunny Singh, who defeated Glenbrook North’s Will Sauser 7-5, 6-2 and Neuqua Valley’s Amit Iyer 6-0, 6-3 but lost 7-6(2), 6-2 to Rockford Auburn’s Brendan Metzler on Friday in singles, finished in the 17-20 bracket, coach Don Waybright said.

“He definitely held onto his seed,” Waybright said of Singh, who was seeded 17-32 before the tournament began. “I think he played well.”

Champaign Central’s Austin Aten lost 2-6, 6-4, 6-3 in the fourth round of the singles’ consolation bracket to Downers Grove South’s Jon Artus.

In the team standings, Hinsdale Central was first with 48 points, and Lake Forest and Lincolnshire Stevenson were tied for second with 31. Uni High was 27th with seven points, and Centennial and Central were tied for 37th with six points.
