Central tennis wins fifth straight sectional title
CHAMPAIGN — Another year, another sectional championship for Central boys’ tennis.
“It’s always your goal to keep the streak going,” Central coach Scott Davis said after the Maroons claimed their fifth straight title Saturday at the University of Illinois’ Atkins Tennis Center. “We know teams are always trying to knock us off, but I think it says a lot for our kids to continue the tradition. This group has really bonded and is a really close group. They cheer as much, if not more, for their teammates than themselves.”
Central’s Austin Aten won the singles title, beating Centennial’s Sunny Singh 6-1, 6-2.
That victory for the Maroons senior came after he defeated St. Thomas More’s Travis Tressler 6-0, 6-3 in the semifinals.
Tressler is the only player to beat the Indianapolis recruit this season as Aten takes a 30-1 record into the state tournament.
“Austin is playing great,” Davis said. “I told Austin that he was going to likely face Travis in the semifinals, and Travis is a great player, but the idea of being able to revenge the one loss was great motivation for Austin.”
Aten wasn’t the only player to win crucial matches for the Maroons.
The doubles tandem of Gabe Mitchell and Michael Yoo won the doubles championship after beating Centennial’s Andrew Scaggs and Patrick Kearney 6-3, 6-3.
“They had beaten Scaggs and Kearney at the Big 12 (meet), but it was a three-set match that was really tight,” Davis said. “They were looking forward to coming back and maybe getting another opportunity.”
