Saturday's highlights: Centennial soccer wins title

CHARLESTON — Two blowouts helped Centennial girls’ soccer claim the Charleston Tournament title on Saturday, with the Chargers topping Mattoon 7-0 before downing Urbana 6-0.

Thursday's highlights: Sages rally past Sabers

In baseball

■ Monticello 6, St. Thomas More 2. The Sages scored three runs in the sixth inning to break open a 2-2 tie. Logan Hislope went 2 for 4 and drove in a run for the Sages. Luke Stokowski hit a double and had two RBI for Monticello. Nick Fruehling was 3 for 4 and scored a run for the Sabers.

Bulletin board: Smith signs with Prairie Stars

CHAMPAIGN — St. Thomas More senior Airiana Smith signed last week with Illinois-Springfield, where she’ll continue her basketball career.

Smith averaged 6.5 points per game and knocked down 25 three-pointers this season, when the Sabers made a run to a Class 3A sectional title-game appearance. She earned News-Gazette All-Area special mention honors.

Why he was chosen: The senior flourished for the Chargers, winning the 100-meter dash and 200 at the 16-team Red Grange Invitational in Wheaton, which came three days after he won the 100, 200 and 400 in a dual meet against Normal Community.

Monday's highlights: Monticello softball tops Urbana

Tuscola 4, Central A&M 0. Nick Bates pitched a two-hit shutout, striking out 14 in a win on the road. Bates totaled two hits, as did teammates Andrew Erickson, Dalton Hoel and Kaleb Williams.

Centennial 14-2, Peoria Richwoods 0-3. Mason Joop drove in four runs on three hits, Jordan Williams knocked in three and Alec Thomas and Cameron Hedge combined for a shutout in the opener. Luke Smith homered in the second game, but the Chargers’ offense was stifled.

Thursday's highlights: Bulldogs softball walks off

Bloomington 5, Champaign Central 4. Matt Brown had two doubles and an RBI while Joe Aeilts also had two hits and two RBI for the Maroons (15-5, 4-2 Big 12 Conference) in a game halted in the sixth inning because of lightning.
