Monday's highlights: STM volleyball wins thriller

In volleyball

■ St. Thomas More 2, Unity 1.
Lexi Wallen and Tori McCoy combined for 29 kills for the Sabers in a 30-28, 19-25, 25-21 home win. Hannah Murray had 20 assists and Allie Kreie  added 16 for STM. Lizzy Barnard led Unity with 23 kills and teammate Bailey Reifsteck finished with 30 assists.

Saturday's highlights (9/21): PBL volleyball takes title



■ At Edwardsville. COREY WHITE finished eighth to help Champaign Central to fourth place at the 21-team boys’ race. HANNAH SHINEW led Central’s girls.

Thursday's prep highlights: M-S volleyball sweeps

In volleyball

■ Mahomet-Seymour 2, Pontiac 0. Sirena Woo and Madi Woo combined for 21 digs for the Bulldogs in a 25-19, 25-11 road victory. Sophie Christianson of M-S finished with four blocks.

■ Judah Christian 2, DeLand-Weldon 0. Emily Gewirtz racked up 25 digs and Kylie Beaumont had 18 assists for the Tribe in a 25-22, 25-23 home win.

Wednesday's prep highlights: M-S boys' golfers win

In golf

■ At Urbana CC. Mitchell Hockman was medalist with a 39, leading the Mahomet-Seymour boys past Bismarck-Henning and Urbana. David Warren shot 40 for the runner-up Blue Devils. Urbana, which was led by J.T. Donahue’s 42, was third.

■ Champaign Central 2, Urbana 1. Emma Atkinson racked up 35 assists for the Maroons, who opened defense of their Big 12 Conference co-championship with a 23-25, 25-19, 25-15 home win. Dana Westfield and Maddie LeGrande had 13 kills apiece for Central, and teammate Alyssa Olson added 10 kills.

Bulletin Board: Monticello field among best

MONTICELLO — For the second time in three years, Monticello has received a Field of Excellence Award sponsored by Pioneer Athletics. The criteria includes quality of the field, striping and field decorations. Monticello was one of 73 secondary and college fields recognized for 2012.

Fred Kroner: Central led way after Title IX started

CHAMPAIGN — Sarah Little never got the inside story from the source, just what she would later read in archived newspaper articles.

And yet, she became part of the bigger story when she was too young to realize the magnitude.

Her father, Roger, was a circuit court judge who in 1974 presided over a case involving an Urbana girl who wanted to participate in athletics.

■ At Peoria. Led by COREY WHITE (27th place) and ASHTON HYATT (29th), Champaign Central was 10th among 52 teams. Danville was 16th behind JOHNNY LEVERENZ (third) and CALEB HUMMER (seventh).

Thursday's prep highlights: Centennial rallies for volleyball win

In volleyball

■ Centennial 2, Springfield Sacred Heart-Griffin 1. The Chargers rallied to pull out a 23-25, 25-16, 25-21 home win behind Miaya Peacock’s 10 kills and Jaime Johnson’s 16 assists.

■ Urbana 2, Monticello 1. The Tigers rallied for a 22-25, 25-23, 25-23 home win. Alyssa Rook piled up 21 digs for the Sages, and teammate Rowan Crozier had eight kills.
