Aten, Maroons cap 'special year'

ARLINGTON HEIGHTS — As he relaxed and reflected at home Friday night, Champaign Central boys’ tennis coach Scott Davis realized what a special group of players he had this season, starting with senior Austin Aten.

“He finished in the top 32 (in singles) all four years,” Davis said. “It has to rank up there as one of the best careers in C-U tennis history.”

Aten, Central among leaders

ARLINGTON HEIGHTS — Champaign Central’s Austin Aten was at his best Thursday.

In three previous appearances at the boys’ tennis state tournament, Aten had won once in the main draw, bouncing back in previous years for eight wins in the consolation bracket.

Sunday Conversation: Sally Walker

At a youthful 53, Sally Walker is way too young to retire. But after 31 years at Uni High, Walker is ready for new challenges. Staff writer Bob Asmussen caught up with Walker in Salem, Va., where she is working at the NCAA Division II softball tournament. She is in charge of the umpires, so Walker has plenty on her plate for what will be a busy retirement.

Saturday's prep highlights: M-S clinches Corn Belt

In baseball

■ Mahomet-Seymour 4, Olympia 1. Cully Day and Jack Rettig each had a hit and drove in a run for the visiting Bulldogs, who clinched the Corn Belt Conference title with the win. Day picked up the win on the mound, firing a complete-game three-hitter with seven strikeouts and no earned runs.

Teams of the Week: Monticello track & field in spotlight


The Sages won the 12-school Okaw Valley Conference meet by 30 points against Shelbyville. Teammates Carter Ness and Clay Becker went 1-2 in the 300-meter hurdles and joined Jesse Galaway and Josh Burton on the winning 1,600 relay. Daniel Welling won the high jump.
