Athletes of the Week: Arteaga and Thompson

Alex Arteaga, St. Joseph-Ogden, track and field, Senior

Recently: Won four events at the Spartan Classic: long jump, triple jump, 300-meter hurdles individually and was on the victorious 1,600 relay.

In his own words: "This year I've had PRs in all my events. I definitely put in a harder winter training season."

I'm always texting ... my friends.

I'm dying to see ... "The Avengers."

I'm driving ... my great-grandpa's 1997 Grand Marquis. It gets about 13 miles per gallon.

My first job was ... I worked at Best Buy last winter. Before that, I cleaned up frat houses on campus. Those kitchens were pretty gross.

I started running ... in sixth grade.

I'm winning the Illinois Marathon in ... 2018.

My favorite track ... is the state course (at Eastern Illinois). The blue track is always cool.

Who does better with the ladies at SJ-O, football players or runners? I would say the runners.

Next year ... I'm going to Washington University in St. Louis to study mechanical engineering.

SJ-O is ... an awesome school to attend and to compete for.

Samone Thompson, Champaign Central, track and field, Senior

Recently: Illinois commitment set school records in both hurdles races at last Friday's Urbana Open. She won the 300 hurdles and the long jump. Earlier in the week, she tied her school record in the 100 hurdles and won the long jump and 200 dash in a four-school meet at Mahomet.

In her words: "It's going good. I've set some high goals, and so far I'm getting there."

I'm always texting ... my coaches.

I'm dying to see ... "Think Like A Man."

I'm driving ... my mom's SUV.

I need concerts to ... Drake — again.

My first job was ... I had a (News-Gazette) paper route in the fourth grade.

My favorite sport ... Track

I'm winning the Illinois Marathon in ... 2020.

I'm going to win a Big Ten title ... in the 300 hurdles.

My favorite track ... Urbana's track. It's so nice.

Central High School is ... different.
