Salt Fork trio posts solid showing before shifting attention to state meet

URBANA — Gracie Jessup epitomizes the idea of the young leading the young.

Jessup is just a sophomore at Salt Fork, yet she's the veteran in a three-strong girls' track and field group preparing for the Class 1A state preliminaries on Thursday.

That trio first showed off at Monday evening's 38th annual News-Gazette Honor Roll Meet.

All systems are go for Snedeker

CHRISMAN — Hearing Quinci Snedeker discuss a recent obstacle to her track and field career, one wouldn't have any idea it affects more than just her performance for the Georgetown-Ridge Farm/Chrisman girls'.

"I kind of crashed at a race," the Cardinal student said. "Had a couple heart issues from what my watch has been tracking."

Blue Ridge 11, Ridgeview 1. Jayden Dalton drove in three runs on two hits, including a double, and Aaron Jayne struck out seven and only yielded two hits to lift the host Knights (11-14) to a five-inning nonconference win. Jayne also helped himself out at the plate with two RBI.

At St. Joseph. Host St. Joseph-Ogden produced first-place finishes from three of its relay teams — 400-meter, 800 and 1,600 — to help catapult the Spartans to their eighth straight Class 1A sectional title on a night where a flurry of area athletes advanced to the state meet.

Thursday's prep highlights: Nettles stars for ALAH

At Assumption. Arthur-Lovington-Atwood-Hammond's Kenli Nettles qualified in four events at last year's state meet after a strong sectional showing. The Knights' standout junior outdid herself in Thursday's Class 1A sectional by sweeping her three races and one field event.

Talents lead Kimbro to new heights

IOWA CITY, Iowa — Jenny Kimbro departed the campus of Eastern Illinois University on May 21, 2016, with three Class 1A individual girls' track and field state titles.

That's not to mention the knowledge she'd helped Salt Fork to the 1A team championship, the Storm's first in the sport.
