Sophomore advanced in all of her events, winning long jump heat in 17 feet, 91/2 inches and clearing 5-2 and 36-53/4 in the high and triple jumps, respectively.

CHARLESTON — Atleigh Hamilton’s return to the scene of her freshman-year breakout couldn’t have started any better.

The St. Joseph-Ogden sophomore ripped off a long jump of 18 feet, 73/4 inches on her very first try in Thursday’s Class 1A state preliminaries, giving her the top distance over Pinckneyville’s Dakota Krone by 3 inches.

Relaxed Nettles still focused on state success

CHARLESTON — Kenli Nettles boasts a bubbly personality that doesn’t disappear when the Arthur-Lovington-Atwood-Hammond junior dons her red and black track and field uniform.

Rantoul's Harper runs in honor of friend

RANTOUL — At the April 24 Danville boys' track and field quadrangular meet, Jerry Harper had his day in the sun.

In a 400-meter dash that, time-wise, essentially came down to the Rantoul junior against Danville senior Quemarii Williams, Harper reached the finish line first with a then-season-best 49.03 seconds, bettering Williams' 49.34.

Urbana athlete fueled by hardships

URBANA — Monday offered a rarity in Lanaeja Carter's senior track and field season with Urbana.

The Tigers' standout thrower simply didn't have a good day in the ring.

At the 38th annual News-Gazette Honor Roll Meet, hosted by Urbana, Carter managed a top toss of 113 feet, 2 inches in the discus.

Salt Fork trio posts solid showing before shifting attention to state meet

URBANA — Gracie Jessup epitomizes the idea of the young leading the young.

Jessup is just a sophomore at Salt Fork, yet she's the veteran in a three-strong girls' track and field group preparing for the Class 1A state preliminaries on Thursday.

That trio first showed off at Monday evening's 38th annual News-Gazette Honor Roll Meet.
