Robertson 'was a gentle soul'

RANTOUL — Individuals in Rantoul and beyond are grieving after the sudden death of Donnell Robertson.

The 17-year-old died over the weekend, less than a month after he completed his most recent high school track and field season at Rantoul. Robertson also played football.

Vaughn wins NCAA discus title

EUGENE, Ore. — Luke Vaughn never won a state title in the discus during his high school career.

But the former Centennial standout can now call himself an NCAA champion.

The Memphis graduate student won the event late Friday night during the NCAA Championships at Hayward Field with a toss of 198 feet, 2 inches.

Friday night lights. Marching bands. Student sections. Pork chop sandwiches. That's right, the high school football season kicks off this night. Defending Class 2A state champion Gibson City-Melvin-Sibley opens at Ford County rival Paxton-Buckley-Loda, one of many marquee games set for the next nine weeks.

On campus: May 29, 2018

Senior Karly Goodman, from Arthur-Lovington/Atwood-Hammond, earned All-American honors at the NCAA Division III Outdoor Track & Field Championships held in LaCrosse, Wis. Goodman set Illinois Wesleyan program records with a second-place finish in the javelin at 144 feet, 1 / 2 inch and an eighth-place finish in the shot put at 45-1.

NOBLESVILLE, Ind.  — A teacher who was shot while tackling and disarming a student at an Indiana school said Monday that his swift decisions “were the only acceptable actions” to save his seventh-grade classroom.

The local high school spring sports season is rapidly winding down now. On Saturday, we watched athletes from the boys' track and field and boys' tennis realms wrap up their respective campaigns.

For us, that leaves just four area athletic teams still rolling through the postseason: Tuscola baseball, St. Joseph-Ogden softball, Argenta-Oreana softball and Mahomet-Seymour softball.
