Ex-STM star nets state honor

Before Mica Allison began her senior season with the St. Thomas More volleyball team, coach Stan Bergman was preparing Allison's resume.

Allison kept building on that throughout a 2017 campaign that ended with a Class 2A state championship win, and it paid off one more time Tuesday.

A little more than a week after heading to Auburn to start her college volleyball career, Allison was named the Gatorade Illinois Player of the Year.

"Actually, I saw I had a Twitter notification, so that's how I found out," Allison said with a laugh. "It's very cool. I feel very blessed."

As a setter and outside hitter, Allison had 399 assists, 328 kills and 217 digs last season for STM. Now, The News-Gazette's 2017 Player of the Year's prep run is in the books with one last victory.

"She's super excited," Bergman said. "This was not at the forefront of her mind, but she's absolutely loving where she is right now."
