VanDalsen leads Sages wrestlers to state
VANDALIA — Monticello will have seven participants this weekend at the Assembly Hall, and Argenta-Oreana had two sectional champions at the Class 1A Vandalia Sectional on Saturday.
Tanner VanDalsen had the Sages’ lone sectional championship at 195 pounds after he won a 4-2 decision against Cumberland’s Timmy Carli.
Austin Hyde at 126, Jacob Burton at 160 and Brendan Menacher at 182 all placed second for Monticello, while Logan Knisley (106) and Dylan Knisley (145) came in third.
Zach Armstrong also will wrestle in the state meet after placing fourth at 220.
For Argenta-Oreana, Nate Josza (132) and Rob Lane (145) won sectional championships.
Wallick wins again. Gibson City-Melvin-Sibley/Fisher’s Josh Wallick beat Bismarck-Henning’s Morgan Supergan 4-1 in the 285-pound championship match at the Class 1A Olympia Sectional to move to 46-0 on the season.
It was the second straight week Wallick has beaten Supergan (31-2) and fifth straight time in the postseason. Chet McClure (138) won a sectional title for the Falcons and will take a 42-5 record into his fourth state appearance next weekend.
LeRoy had one sectional champion in Ty Sandy at 220. Six other Panthers — Alex Matlock (106), Tate Ruffner (113), Austin Matlock (120), Peyton Roop (132), D.J. Morgan (145) and Caleb Wilson (160) — also advanced.
Evan Bahler of Prairie Central at 145 and Kye Reczek of Clinton at 160 won titles, while St. Joseph-Ogden’s Austin Hedrick (152) and Austin Upton (170) both advanced.
