State wrestling stars: Day 1

JOSH RUETTIGER, Lincoln-Way West
The 152-pound senior didn’t waste any time getting started in his first Class 2A bout. recording a pin in 10 seconds against a foe who’d won 37 matches.
BRANDON BRIGGS, North Boone
A state champion last year in 1A as a 103-pound freshman, he has moved up a weight class and turned in a powerful performance, winning 17-0.
AUSTIN HEDRICK, St. Joseph-Ogden
The unranked junior allowed just one point while moving into the quarterfinals in 1A at 152 pounds. Both SJ-O qualifiers were victorious on Thursday.
JERED CORTEZ, Glenbard North
Unbeaten as a sophomore at 120 pounds, the 126-pound junior won his 45th match in a row this year with a 51-second pin. He’s on a roll.
JOSH ALBER, Dakota
As a freshman, the state champion was 37-0. As a sophomore, the state champ was 44-0. As a junior, he’s 43-0 entering the quarterfinals.
