1947 Rose Bowl Memory
Mike McDonald
The game was on New Years and we were all home in Galena for vacation from the university. There were four of us and we were all out cruising. We were in and out of an auto, listening to the game on the car radio. We were pleased that Illinois was so far ahead near the end of the game, but we were extremely irritated at the announcer because he didn't know who the Illinois players were. He kept getting them mixed up.
The other thing I particularly remember about that game is that later they showed a film of it at the university Auditorium. It included the parade, although why I remember that, I don't know.
I started at the university in 1946 as a freshman. I went to all of the football games that were here. It seems to me that an AA (Alumni Association) ticket book may have been $15 or so and that was for all the basketball and football games. I may be wrong about that, but in today's dollars, it was a ridiculously small amount.
