Lucas hurt in victory

CHAMPAIGN — Injuries, it seems, aren’t just limited to current Illinois basketball players.

A week after 2017 commit Javon Pickett injured his knee, 2016 signee Te’Jon Lucas joined the list of future Illini on the injured list Saturday night against Centennial at Parkland’s Dodds Athletic Center.

URBANA — Mahomet-Seymour wrestling coach Rob Ledin gave the other coaches at the Class 2A Urbana Regional seeding meeting fair warning.

It didn’t matter that 152-pounder Clayton Bell entered the tournament 4-1 overall and 1-1 in varsity matches, nor did it matter that those were the only matches of the freshman’s high school career.

Tate: McCaffery has Iowa in enviable position

The big-revenue sports appeared stuck in a muddy cornfield. Kirk Ferentz’s footballers, having lost to Iowa State for the third time in four years, ruled hapless Illinois but finished in a 5-for-7 swoon that included a 51-14 loss to Minnesota.

UI roundup: Eggleston paces men's gymnasts

CHAMPAIGN — Chandler Eggleston won the floor exercise and vault competitions Saturday for Illinois men’s gymnastics, helping the Illini rout Temple and Illinois-Chicago at Huff Hall.

The Illini tallied 436.550 points to the Owls’ 394.900 and Flames’ 391.050.

Illini legends, lists and lore: Tricia Taliaferro

Happy birthday today to former Illini soccer coach Tricia Taliaferro, now the women’s development coach for U.S. Soccer. Her current assignment is serving as the main scout for the Under-16 Girls’ National Team. She’s the daughter of UI football alum Mike Taliaferro, an Illini quarterback in 1962 and ’63.
