EVANSTON — Champaign Central’s Payton Woods was the highest area finisher Friday in the preliminaries at the IHSA boys’ swimming and diving state meet.
The Maroons sophomore placed 15th in the 50-yard freestyle in 21.74 seconds. Woods missed advancing to Saturday’s consolation finals by 0.12 second.
MAHOMET — An ice-cold second half doomed Mahomet-Seymour as Effingham rallied to win 51-45 Friday night in a nonconference contest.
M-S (15-11), paced by Sam Hohlfelder’s 19 first-half points, led by as many as 10 midway through the second quarter.

CHAMPAIGN — The Centennial Chargers locked up the Big 12 Conference title a week ago. That didn’t stop them from crushing Eisenhower 64-49 on Friday night.
“We had to finish our season strong,” senior Michael Finke said. “We have to play every game like it means something.”
