Injection of youth carries Illini men's tennis

STILLWATER, Okla. — Aleks Vukic didn't slot into his customary No. 1 singles spot in the first round of the NCAA men's tennis tournament on Friday.

It could have been a devastating blow to Illinois' tournament chances. The Big Ten Athlete of the Year went unbeaten in conference singles action and rose to No. 3 in the country.

Hergenrother’s double-overtime strike gives Sabers sixth straight regional title

CHAMPAIGN — One thought flashed through St. Thomas More forward Dana Hergenrother’s mind as she nudged the ball away from the Bloomington Central Catholic goalkeeper inside the 6-yard box with three minutes left in double overtime during Friday’s Class 1A St. Thomas More Regional final.

Hill: 'I had fun with it'

Less than 24 hours before graduation, Malcolm Hill got in a workout at the ARC. The soon-to-be former Illinois guard is headed to Las Vegas after graduation to continue to train for the start of his professional career. Before that, however, he spoke about what his four years at Illinois and upcoming graduation meant to him.

SPRINGFIELD — Brad Underwood's six-year, $18 million deal with the University of Illinois didn't officially begin until Thursday, when his appointment was approved by UI trustees.

But the Illini basketball coach started accumulating a salary March 18, as soon as his appointment took effect.

Stalter, Peitzmeier's hurdles competition out of this country

PAXTON — Fisher junior Alayna Stalter was confused.

She knew the area had boasted a few of the state's top hurdlers, including herself and St. Joseph-Ogden's Parker Francisco. But mid-season, she saw a name of a runner from LeRoy that she didn't recognize next to impressive times: sophomore Janika Peitzmeier.
