Laura Lee board plans plea for financial help

DANVILLE — For more than 60 years, Laura Lee Fellowship House has served as a beacon of education in the local community, but now, the board of directors are inviting community members to a meeting next week where they will make a plea for financial help.

Empty Bowls event to benefit Crisis Nursery

URBANA — Local potters are once again asking the community to help support children in crisis by coming to a soup and bread supper.

The Empty Bowls fundraiser will be held from 4-6 p.m. March 6 at Silvercreek restaurant, 402 N. Race St., U, with all proceeds benefiting the Crisis Nursery.

Mad Hat-ter Tea Party to raise funds against cancer

CHAMPAIGN — Gretchen Potter's many hats once kept her granddaughters entertained, and now they'll be put to use helping raise money for the American Cancer Society.

Potter, of Champaign, has 500 hats, and she'll be bringing 50 of them to the society's Mad Hat-ter Tea Party fundraiser set for Sunday at Big Grove Tavern, 1 E. Main St., C.

Volunteers prepare for fundraiser to fight homelessness

CHAMPAIGN — Sleeping bag: Check.

Long underwear: Check.

Cardboard box: Check.

The temperatures are on their way down for the weekend, and dozens of volunteers are preparing for a cold Friday night sleeping outside in boxes in downtown Champaign and on the University of Illinois Quad for C-U at Home's annual fundraiser for the homeless called One Winter Night.

Fundraiser on homelessness awareness planned at 2 sites

CHAMPAIGN — C-U at Home, the organization housing some of the community's most vulnerable homeless folks, will repeat its winter fundraiser, One Winter Night, in which people spend a cold night outside in boxes.

But this year, One Winter Night will be held in two places, in downtown Champaign like last year, and on the University of Illinois Quad.

Mitten tree fundraiser under way at Covenant

URBANA — The Provena Covenant Medical Center Foundation has brought out its annual mitten tree for the holiday season, and is asking visitors to help with this fund-raising project.

Anyone making a $5 donation can write a holiday message on a paper mitten that will be displayed on the tree in the Covenant Medical Center lobby.

URBANA — The University of Illinois Foundation has tapped a University of Chicago fundraiser to be its next president.

Thomas Farrell will replace Sidney Micek, who will continue to serve as the UI Foundation's president and CEO through December 2012.

Diabetes fundraiser set Sunday

CHAMPAIGN — There's still time to sign up to take part in the American Diabetes Association's fundraiser — Champaign County Step Out: Walk to Stop Diabetes — being held Sunday, event coordinator Wendy Wallace says.

The walk will take place at Hessel Park in Champaign, with registration beginning at 9 a.m., and the walk will begin at 10 a.m.
