The Fit List

I’m looking forward to the race calendar starting to pick up steam for the spring. Here’s what I’ve got for the next couple of weekends:

Weekend of March 2-3:
Miller Park Zoo Stampede

Mastering cross country

When Randy Stearns ran an 8-kilometer cross country race earlier this month, he was competing against some of the best over-40 runners in the country.

Runner's symposium

Runners, if you are training for one of the Christie Clinic Illinois Marathon races, you might want to stop by the Christie Foundation's Runners' Symposium this weekend.

The symposium is from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday at the Hilton Garden Inn in Champaign, and it will provide information to runners competing in any of the Illinois Marathon races on the weekend of April 26-27.

The allure of Allerton

With the reopening last fall of the south entrance bridge at Allerton Park near Monticello, Dean Hixson saw an opportunity.

The park is Hixson’s favorite place to run, and when the bridge was reopened after 11 years, the Monticello resident thought he’d get together a group of friends and do a run that encompassed the trails on both sides of the Sangamon River.

The Fit List

Good luck to those of you heading to Charleston this weekend for the Mid-Winter Classic. Here’s a list of races for the month:

Weekend of Feb. 2-3:
Charleston Challenge Mid-Winter Classic

BQ or bust

Several runners I know have qualifed for the Boston Marathon in the last few months.

I'm excited for them, and it's got me thinking about running Boston a couple of years ago and what a wonderful experience it was.

Joe's race

A race organized for more than 20 years by Human Kinetics is being renamed in honor of a late employee who was a strong advocate of running.

The Fit List

It may be cold out, but there are still races going on. Here’s a look at the next month:

I resolve to ...

Call it a birthday resolution.

When Tony Hillen turned 29 shortly before Christmas 2011, he resolved he would not be overweight when he hit 30. He weighed 295 pounds, and he set a goal of losing 100 pounds during the next year.

When he weighed in a couple of weeks ago, as he was about to turn 30, he’d lost more than 115 pounds.

Time for a new goal.
