URBANA — The Urbana school board is expected to vote Tuesday on a candidate for its next high school principal.

Urbana school board OKs $3 million in building bonds

URBANA — The Urbana school board Tuesday unanimously approved issuing $3 million worth of bonds to pay for upcoming building improvements.

The school district typically issues the bonds about every three years, said school board President John Dimit, and this time, will be paying about 0.5 percent in interest.

Urbana school board abates portion of property tax levy

URBANA – The Urbana school board voted unanimously Tuesday to abate $1 million in property taxes, as it has done annually since 2010, for construction debt it will pay off using the school facilities sales tax.

The debt is from bonds the school district sold in 2002, when it refinanced.

Champaign, Urbana candidates file for April school board elections

There will be a few contested school board races in Champaign and Urbana in April.

One contested race will be in Urbana, where candidates run in subdistricts determined by where they live, and seven people will run for five  seats in Champaign. Wednesday was the last day candidates could file their petitions.

Urbana extends early retirement incentive to Feb. 1

URBANA — Urbana teachers who are currently eligible for an early retirement incentive through the school district will have until Feb. 1 to sign up.

The school board unanimously approved that extension at its meeting Tuesday.

And board members will discuss at a later date, probably in February, whether it will end the incentive.

URBANA — The Urbana school board at its Tuesday meeting is expected to extend the deadline for its early-retirement incentive program for teachers and may discuss the program's future.

Urbana school board approves 5 percent higher tax levy

URBANA — The Urbana school board approved a preliminary tax levy for next year at its Tuesday business meeting. It will ask for about $29.1 million next year, about 5 percent more than it received last year.

Last year, it asked for about $28.5 million and received about $27.7 million.

The levy will come up for final approval in December.

Township sues Urbana school district over documents

URBANA — Cunningham Township has filed a complaint in Champaign County Circuit Court, saying the Urbana school district "willfully withheld" records the township requested using the Freedom of Information Act.

School board candidate petitions available

Petitions for those who want to run for the Urbana or Champaign school board in April are now available.

In Champaign, four seats are up for election, and in Urbana, all seven seats are up.

The election is April 9.

URBANA — The Urbana school board unanimously approved a budget for this school year at its Tuesday meeting, but items in it may change as the district gets more information from Springfield.

"This information is as good as it was the day I finished it," business director Carol Baker said.
