August temperatures varied, but rainfall didn't

CHAMPAIGN — August in Champaign-Urbana was a month of "bipolar" temperatures, said state climatologist Jim Angel of the Illinois State Water Survey, with cool temperatures in the first half of the month and above-average readings in the second half.

But it was extraordinarily dry all month.

August shaping us as second-driest ever

CHAMPAIGN — This may end up being the second-driest August in Champaign-Urbana weather history, according to the Illinois State Water Survey.

And the dry weather is beginning to worry farmers.

Heavy snow possible early in the week; mild weekend ahead

CHAMPAIGN — The National Weather Service says more snow and cold is on the way for the early part of the work week, but conditions will grow milder by Friday.

Light snow could begin falling along the Interstate 74 corridor Monday morning, according to the National Weather Service. Early accumulations could total up to an inch before the precipitation begins mixing with rain.

Winter Weather Advisory

The National Weather Service has issued a Winter Weather Advisory for DeWitt and McLean Counties until noon Wednesday. The advisory calls for snow and freezing drizzle. Accumulations of 1 to 2 inches of snow is expected Tuesday evening into Wednesday morning. Total snow amounts are expected to be 4 to 5 inches by noon on Wednesday.

Public works crews to plow snow through the night

CHAMPAIGN — Area snow plow drivers were scheduled to work throughout the night to keep streets and roads clear of snow, with additional crews available to take over on Friday if necessary.

The National Weather Service has issued several advisories in advance of the winter weather that is forecast for Thursday afternoon and Friday.

Macon County is under a winter storm warning until 6 a.m. Friday.  Three to five inches of snow and one tenth of an inch of ice is forecast for this area.

Winter weather advisory issued for East Central Illinois

The National Weather Service has issued a winter weather advisory for Ford and Iroquois Counties from 6 p.m. Thursday to noon Friday.

In those areas, snow accumulation of three to five inches and ice accumulation of one-tenth of an inch are expected.  A period of heavy snow with rates of one inch per hour is expected late Thursday night.

Wind advisory issued for East Central Illinois

The National Weather Service has issued a wind advisory for East Central Illinois from noon to 6 p.m. Monday.  Counties under the advisory include Champaign, Vermilion, Douglas, Edgar, Coles, Shelby, Moultrie, Piatt, Macon, DeWitt and McLean.

Updated: wind advisory in effect for two area counties

Update 3:15 PM:

The wind advisory for most of East Central Illinois has been canceled, but it remains in effect for Ford and Iroquois Counties until 6 p.m. Monday night.

The National Weather Service says strong winds out of the west will continue through this evening, with gusts of up to 45 miles per hour.

Fog advisory, flood watch issued

The National Weather has issued a Dense Fog Advisory for Champaign, DeWitt, McLean, Piatt and Vermilion counties until 4am Tuesday morning and for Ford and Iroquois Counties until 6am Tuesday morning.  Visibility will be one quarter of a mile or less, with some areas seeing visibility dropping to near zero.
