URBANA — A banquet center operated by a longtime local catering business has filled the void left by Kennedy's restaurant at Stone Creek.
Classic Events Catering has opened the Stone Creek Events Center at 2560 S. Stone Creek Blvd., U, and is using it to host special events, such as weddings, receptions, corporate luncheons and anniversary parties.
DANVILLE — Danville city officials shut down the Oaklawn Inn on East Main Street today, deeming it uninhabitable due to various code violations including no working fire alarm system, according to Mayor Scott Eisenhauer.
All guests of the hotel’s main facility at 1824 E. Main St. must be out by noon Wednesday, according to Eisenhauer.
CHAMPAIGN — Area restaurant owners and managers will get two chances Monday to learn how to reduce food waste in their establishments and help feed the hungry.
Two sessions are scheduled that day at the Champaign County Farm Bureau auditorium, 801 N. Country Fair Drive, C, to explain Zero Percent, a system designed to help restaurants move out excess food.
CHAMPAIGN — Local McDonald's franchisee Dwight Miller was hailed as a high-energy, goal-oriented businessman in being named Parkland College Foundation's Entrepreneur of the Year.
About 250 people turned out Wednesday to honor Miller — whose company operates 10 area McDonald's restaurants — at a banquet at the I Hotel and Conference Center in Champaign.
DANVILLE — A contractor started Thursday on exterior renovations to the former Deluxe Restaurant that's now Rich's Deluxe.
Demolition is expected to begin early next week in Savoy to make way for a new development.
David Borchers, owner of Borchers Decorating, which is handling the demolition, said the brick building on the southwest corner of Curtis Road and Dunlap Avenue and the house just south of there will be torn down. Borchers said that will take about three weeks.
CHAMPAIGN — Big Grove Tavern plans to open later this month in the former Jim Gould space in downtown Champaign, its general manager said.
The restaurant expects to begin serving both lunch and dinner May 31, with a series of "soft openings" for dinner a couple weeks before then, general manager Michael Johnson said.
Look for several area Burger Kings to get a total makeover.
Maruti Seth, who operates nine Burger Kings in East Central Illinois, said the Danville store at 18 W. Newell Road reopened last Sunday after a 20-day renovation.
URBANA — Montana Mike's Steakhouse in Urbana has closed after a nearly two-year run.
Co-owner Greg Schmidtknecht said the restaurant, at 1601 N. Cunningham Ave., served its last meal Sunday and its 46 employees were informed Monday morning of the closing.
CHAMPAIGN — Zorba's Restaurant owner Matt Mortenson said he expects to reopen for business sometime today (Thursday, April 12).
