Food for thought on the importance of farming

CHAMPAIGN — Egg casserole, blueberry muffins, fresh fruit platter, plus something to drink.

Ordinarily, a breakfast like that would cost $7.50, according to Champaign County Farm Bureau Manager Brad Uken's calculations.

Meg Makes: A Lebanese twist on a favorite Greek pastry

Each month, I get together to bake with two old News-Gazette friends: Erin Lippitz-Gelsthorpe, with whom I used to work in marketing (she's now at the Champaign Center Partnership) and current News-Gazette Director of Marketing Cassandra Schowengerdt.

Erin is a baking genius and makes incredible cakes. Cassandra is also an excellent baker and has a great eye for delicious recipes.

Leia Kedem: Spice it up to enjoy the taste of eating right

By Leia Kedem

March is National Nutrition Month, and this year's theme is "Enjoy the Taste of Eating Right," given that taste is the best indicator of whether we will eat a food. With warmer weather on the way, I'm asking you, too, to bring the heat and try my favorite way to make healthy foods more exciting — by spicing it up.

Meg Makes: Nothing wrong with crusty bread now and then

Every time I turn around, I feel like I'm reading or hearing about someone cutting bread from his or her diet.

I respect different eating choices and food sensitivities, but to be blunt, these conversations and articles make me want to sink my teeth into a crusty, gluten-laden loaf. Funny how that works.

Meg Makes: A pair of methods for tasty meatballs

My husband, Rob, is half Italian and happens to have come from a family with a killer meatball recipe. It's the dinner I request that he make for special occasions, including my birthday.

No immediate move for Daily Bread

CHAMPAIGN — The Daily Bread Soup Kitchen is looking for a new location, but its leaders' plans are "nebulous" and a move would not be until years down the road.

Meg Makes: A Mexican staple, recreated by my other half

I'm not sure how often I've mentioned this, but I live in a two-cook household. My husband, Rob, is terrific in the kitchen, and he's far better than I am at both recreating traditional dishes and pairing unlikely ingredients for something new and delicious.
