URBANA — The first installment of Champaign County property taxes is due Thursday, said County Treasurer Dan Welch.

For taxes mailed to the treasurer's office, a June 1 postmark is accepted as on time, he said.

Champaign County home sales down 17% in April over 2016

CHAMPAIGN — After a strong March, home sales were down in April compared with the same month a year ago, according to the latest Champaign County Association of Realtors' housing report.

Total home sales decreased 17 percent compared with April 2016, representing a drop from 229 to 190.

Year-to-date sales are also down slightly compared with 2016, from 645 to 630.

Where It All Started/St. Joseph: A door to the past

What's now a winery has been a bank, a telephone exchange and a drug store, among other things, but it has always been a jewel on what was once the town square, and still shows traces of its past.

Tracie Trotter is the owner of the St. Joseph Wyldewood Cellars Winery, a business which had its start in Kansas.

CHAMPAIGN — Since they bought their home in northwest Champaign's Timberline Valley South, Oscar Gamble and his family have enjoyed lakefront living, with access to fishing and kayaking on one of the subdivision's two lakes from their own backyard.

Champaign's Bristol Place project 'down to crunch time'

CHAMPAIGN — The Bristol Place redevelopment project is coming together as it nears the June 23 deadline to apply for state funds.

The project will convert the decaying Bristol Place neighborhood into a rental community financed by tax credits, according to Champaign Neighborhood Programs Manager Kerri Spear.

Not everyone believes in star ratings for nursing homes

CHAMPAIGN — When her family was shopping for a nursing home for her stepmother in Tennessee, Kristina Kerst-Day always got a good feeling from the way the staff members at one home answered the phone and were able to answer her questions.

"Every person who has answered that phone has been amazing," she recalled.
