After months of cold winter days and paying to heat my home, I'm ready in the spring for new ways to make my home more energy efficient. This time of the year is also when many homeowners like myself scramble to put home-improvement plans into action, especially those plans that require hiring expertise to do the work.
CHAMPAIGN — For the first time, new buildings that go up in downtown, Campustown and Midtown could be subject to design requirements as a part of a zoning regulation change that will go before the Champaign City Council tonight.
CHAMPAIGN — A new retail center here, more new apartments there.
A sports bar and a fast food Mexican restaurant on the way.

GIFFORD — The sound of hammers and saws was a common thing in Gifford for the past several years. But that work primarily was to replace homes and other buildings ravaged by the November 2013 tornado.
That sound has returned.
New construction is ongoing in north Gifford — in the Eagle Prairie subdivision.
URBANA — Some new signs have popped up outside selected restrooms at the University of Illinois.
They have the familiar wheelchair icon for accessibility, and an image of a toilet (just to make things clear).
But they don't say "men" or "women." These bathrooms are labeled "all gender."
Kind of like your bathrooms at home, as one employee points out.
URBANA — In what Mayor Laurel Prussing called the biggest fine Urbana has ever imposed, landlord Paul Zerrouki and his company Platinum Group Properties must pay the city $473,700 for structural violations in three buildings, a Champaign County Judge ordered this week.
After a year of unprecedented turnover on campus — including a new chancellor, provost, football coach and athletic director — University of Illinois students can look forward to more new faces and places when they return to school next August.
