Don Follis: Fear of God surpasses all other fears

Fear seems to come in relentless waves. When it comes, it is hard to manage. Watching the recent PBS Ken Burns seven-part documentary "The Roosevelts — An Intimate History," I heard again the famous FDR line, "We have nothing to fear but fear itself."

Don Follis: Working at being self-aware will carry you home

A 29-year-old pastor I mentor asked me, "Looking back on your career, what area would you have given more attention to?"

"My self-awareness," I said instantly.

"What do you mean?" he pressed.

I explained that I would have paid more attention to recognizing and understanding my moods and my emotions — naming them, feeling them, and dealing with them.

Judah Christian gift a father's dream realized

CHAMPAIGN — Gene A. Salmon didn't have a lot of hobbies. He liked his job, loved his family and was passionate about Christian education.

He also knew the value of hard work, and demonstrated it throughout his life — starting as a bookkeeper for Cross Construction, the Urbana-based company he'd eventually go on to own.
